Frequently Asked Questions

A: Although there are different versions of it (e.g. diluted fuel, inaccurate meters or measuring devices), by far, the most common type of gas station fraud is: skimming.

A:  A skimming operation involves multiple criminals who work in tandem to install skimming devices (electronic devices that can capture and store your debit/credit card information every time you use it at the terminal) at various gas pumps. They periodically return to collect the devices, which, by that time, might have dozens if not hundreds of stolen cards.

A:  It depends. Sometimes, the gas stations themselves will self-report; that is, they will notify their past consumers that one or more fuel pumps might have been compromised. Other times, law enforcement may be contact victims to assist a criminal prosecution. Or it may be that your financial institution notifies you of suspicious activity and you are able to trace it back to a purchase at a gas station.

A:  The only sure fire way to avoid skimming operations is to use cash to purchase your gas. For most people, though, debit/credit cards are used. If so, you should try to go inside to pay with a cashier, but if you have to use a pump outside, try and use one as close to the gas station’s main hub—where the employees work. Skimmers usually try to target the pumps that are hard to see from the main hub or that are out on the fringes.

A:  Usually, victims of gas station fraud will try and do one or all of three things: (1) try and get reimbursed for fraudulent charges; (2) purchase credit monitoring services; and (3) order replacement cards or close compromised accounts and open new ones. A:  While we are lawyers, we are not one law firm.  Actually, we are three separate lawyers from three separate firms, each bringing our unique skills and experience to provide comprehensive, joint representation of our clients.  We are all located in Miami, Florida, which is a hub for these type of fraudulent activities.  There is absolutely no obligation to hire our lawyers and submitting a claim and having an initial consultation are 100% FREE and with no obligations.

A:  No. You may submit a claim for 100% free. The purpose of submitting a claim is to have an attorney review it and contact you back. If that attorney determines that you might have a cause of legal action to pursue against either the gas station, their employees, or other entities, they will inform you. There is no cost for this free consultation. Even if you don’t submit a claim, using our website and learn more about Gas Station Fraud is always free.

A:  After you submit your claim, one of our attorneys will contact you.  If he determines that you may have a cause of legal action as the result of being victimized, and you wish to have us represent you, there will be NO upfront costs or fees.  In fact, we will represent you on a “contingency basis.”  That is, we will pay all costs associated with your case up front and will only get reimbursed and collect a fee if and when we get you money.  Our fees are based on a percentage of the amount of money we recover for you.
